Cuba in San Francisco by Yezenia Herrera
In this dynamic city of San Francisco, there are hundreds of remarkable restaurants, cafes, and bars to choose from. However, for those who live here, finding these places could be at times strenuous and time consuming. Yet, for visitors and foreigners, the search could be down right impossible. Well, this is where I come along.
As a resident of San Francisco for more than three years now, and an addict of caffeine, I have gone to the worst coffee bar known to man as well as the most prestigious café San Francisco has to offer. But over the months, I have found a café that because of its soothing atmosphere and delicious coffee, continually makes me return.
Café Lo Cubano is located in the heart of Laurel Heights and sits on the top of the hill awaiting avid coffee drinkers, bookworms, or computer junkies. But this café is unlike all others for the ambiance mimics the feel of Pre- Castro Cuba. Their menu includes a variety of hot pressed Cuban sandwiches and bold Cuban coffee, including my favorite, Cortadito (a sweetened espresso splashed with milk and topped with foam) that I highly recommend. Impressively enough, they sell Free Trade Coffee as well!
The sweet song of Cuban music, beautiful antiques, and unique art are displayed amidst baristas in black. Live music is also played a few nights a week turning this cute coffee shop into an authentic, stunning wine bar. I advise everyone, San Franciscans and visitors alike, to sit for a cup of coffee in the morning or stay for a glass of wine at night, knowing Cuba can be found and enjoyed in the heart of San Francisco.
