M. Is for Marlow's

Marlow’s Tavern is breaking into the Midtown, Atlanta bar scene in a big way. While the cons of this place are few and far between, the pros are abounding. Marlow’s boasts free covered parking, which is a coveted asset among the Midtown bar scene. Located within blocks of the Woodruff Arts Center, High Museum and Atlanta’s Fox Theater, Marlow’s offers great cocktails, a plethora of dinner selections and an atmosphere that rivals those of Buckhead and beyond.

Marlow’s drink menu includes house specialties such as the Bomb Pop, Cherry Lemonade, Classic Mojito and the ever popular Margarita in specialty flavors such as White Peach, Pomegranate and Raspberry. The food menu offers a scrumptious range from buffalo wings to sushi grade tuna and the intriguing addition of jalapeno corn grits. With artful presentation and such prompt service, dinner is not something that you will have to wait long to enjoy. The best part is that you won’t be walking out with empty pockets, as the food menu and drinks are very moderately priced.

Other amenities include a well stocked bar and wine selection, a late night kitchen, live music nightly and a sophisticated crowd. As every girl must do, upon restroom inspection, Marlow’s passed with more than flying colors. Outdoor dining is perfect for fall nights and a divided smoking/non-smoking section make it even more accommodating for a date or a group of friends out for a night on the town. Dress is casual and there is never a need for reservations.

You can check out their website for more information on locations, menus, weekly specials and a delightfully detailed entertainment schedule. Marlow’s will also be a participant in the Harvest Midtown celebration on Saturday, October 6, 2007. It is definitely worth a stop by Midtown’s newest hot spot.

PDT - Please Dont Tell

All right, I’m going to let you in on a secret, but Please Don’t Tell.

There is a great little speak easy that just opened in June called PDT. You enter through a small hot dog joint, walk into an old phone booth, pick up the phone, and voila! A door opens and you’re let into a modern bar with vintage values.

While the fact that it’s a speak easy is cool and the way that you get in is fun, what I was most impressed with at PDT was the staff and the drink selection.

Everyone who works there is friendly and laid back. The bartender actually enjoys figuring out new concoctions and takes the time to talk to his customers. The drinks are old fashioned, many of them containing egg whites and hard to find liquors, such as Creme de Violet, which is featured on the menu in the Silver Lily. If you take the time to look at the bar, they have an array of alcohol you wished you could find when you were flipping through your Savoy Cocktail Book.

If you’re looking for an interesting to place to hang out with friends or if you’re trying to impress a date, head over to PDT.

Tips:

M-Sa, reservations required, taken day of, after 3pm
Sun, walk ins welcome, no standing room

patio out back

cocktails, $12; beer, $7

opens 6pm

serves hot dogs and hamburgers

Philadelphia Fish & Company

The Philadelphia Fish & Company, located on Chestnut Street between 3rd and 2nd street in the Society Hill district of Philadelphia stands out like a pier on the ocean amongst the restaurant lined street. An outside dining patio with wooden floors and resort umbrellas provide a deck-on-the-bay feel without the low tide smell.

Diners inside enjoy a dimly lit environment with accenting spotlights angled onto the tables individually for a privatized meal. The mauve walls with brandished silver, gold, and teal accents throughout the dining room set the business-casual mood. Artwork is minimal throughout the restaurant with accents on large focal points such as the twin fish statues, rod iron divider, and wall artwork that covers the back end of the dining room.

Meals average between a portion-accurate $20 and $30 an entrée and $8-$15 an appetizer. A variety of bottled and draft beers are on tap including imported and domestic, as well as a wine and cocktail menu.

What I had: I don’t usually eat seafood (it’s just too ocean-y for me), but I decided when in Rome. I opted for the Maryland crab cakes with asparagus and potato which converted me to a crab cake enthusiast. This crab cake must have been made from an entire haul of crabs from one of the Deadliest Catch boats, it was that big. It was the perfect blend of crab meat and, well, cake. The asparagus and the potato were great sides for the meal adding both a juicy and buttery element.

And don’t get me started on the desert! As a proud chocoholic, I went with the chocolate marquis; a flourless pâté cake with raspberry sauce that simply melted on my tongue. It was the perfect texture and viscosity to end the meal on.
