Boston's Bazaar Bizarre

On December 9th, come support local and national artists at the 7th annual Bazaar Bizarre in Boston’s South End neighborhood. The event is being held at the trendy Cyclorama in the Boston Center for the Arts on Tremont Street. Try to think beyond Banana Republic this year. Instead of buying boring mall-bought holiday sweaters for your loved ones, try giving unique hand-made gifts!

With 107 vendors, you’ll be sure to find something special for everyone on your list. From purses to plush donuts, crocheted bobby pins to silk-screened rock posters, you may walk away with a few presents for yourself (a necessary reward for a shopping trip well done)

I’m most looking forward to checking out the Wren Handmade (www.wrenhandmade.com) booth. I’ve been long obsessed with Laura Normandin’s stuffed giraffes and elephants (great gift for adults and the kids), as well as her beautiful hair pins. Also on my radar – Two Trick Pony. I’ll be scooping up some of their hand-printed stationary made from recycled materials.

Drag your friends out of bed, grab a sugar brioche from Flour for energy and be sure to line up early - Bazaar Bizarre will definitely draw in the crowds.

Admission is $1.00. The event starts at 12pm and ends at 6pm.

Spark Crafts

Now in their new home in Porter Square (as of Saturday, July 7), Spark Crafts combines the warmth and coziness of a café with the sleek contemporary design of an Ikea showroom. Spark’s boutique area offers a wide range of arts and craft supplies, including semi-precious stones and crystals, cardstock, multi-colored yard, and more. The craft studios, used for classes, parties, and by members, are painted in funky variations of the store’s signature pink and green. Music playing in the background and fashion magazines and craft books stacked next to patterned couches make it as welcoming as a friend’s living room. Spark Crafts is a great place to hole up during the winter months, as they also teach classes in knitting and crocheting (think: one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts for everyone on your list!).

Grab a couple of gal pals and check out Spark’s popular “Wine and Craft” series on a Friday evening to create new craft projects like cocktail rings, chandelier earrings, pearl necklaces, and more. Or set up a private party with friends or coworkers. You can even arrange to have “Creativity Consultants” visit your house for a girl’s night in. All in all, a cool concept and a great place to pick up a new hobby.
