It’s rare and elusive, and once you find it actually exists, trust me, you don’t want to miss out. Two words, Ladies: sample sale.

Modern Economy is an exclusive sample sale that is only held a few times a year. It’s a design and lifestyle event that features the latest and greatest independent designers. Since I am so excited about this that I don’t even know where to begin, I’ve compiled a list of the top five reasons you absolutely have to attend this event.

The top 5 reasons to check out Modern Economy:
1) Modern is hot
2) Prices up to 70% off retail!
3) No entrance fee
4) Supports indie designers
5) Large parking lot (you know that’s a big deal in SF)

The event is being hosted at Fort Mason, and the goods are designers’ samples, overstock and post-season wares. More specifically, you’ll find things like bedding, ceramics, lighting, and more. If you check out the Modern Economy website, new designers are being added constantly. Just a few of the participating designers are: Rae Dunn, Relish at Home, Dwell, and Inhabit. The list goes on and on…plus, you’ll find items for baby and pets, too!

For more information visit www.modeconomy.com, and don’t miss this event – you’ll definitely regret it.

Wear Your Art On Your Sleeve

A graphic arts community, online store, and ongoing contest, Threadless’ t-shirt design competition is the best place to find original tops for men, women, and children. Started in 2000 by Chicago designers Jake Nickell and Jacob DeHart, Threadless features new t-shirt designs for purchase every Monday. Submitted by both professionals and amateurs, four to seven designs are selected by Threadless members (membership is free) every week from over six hundred submissions. Winners receive $2,000 and have their t-shirt printed and sold.

On Monday July 9th seven new shirts were announced. One shirt is white with the cheeky slogan “I Listen To Bands That Don’t Even Exist Yet,” another shirt features a graphic of a genie sitting in his magic bottle watching television. The shirts range from humorous to abstract and are all printed in limited numbers. Popular shirts tend to sell out quickly; it’s important to join the email list so new shirt announcements are sent to you as soon as they come out.

If you’re tired of buying shirts and then seeing all of your friends wearing the exact same one, or if you dream of walking down the street and bumping into someone wearing your design, Threadless is the perfect place for you.

Jillery

Sitting coyly below the storefronts along 10th street, is the purple and pink painted Jillery. Although slight in size, Jillery’s selection is endless with wall-to-wall jewelry, handmade gifts and vintage accessories.

The store is named after Jill Fagin, an NYU graduate who sold jewelry out of her apartment to make ends meet. After her unique creations graced the pages of Women’s Wear Daily, her aluminum beaded jewelry and housewares were all over New York’s most fabulous galleries and stores. A door in the back of the Greenwich Village location leads to the studio where skilled artisans work on original designs that ship to stores all across the country.

Jillery is best for gifts for any occasion. Everything designed by Jill has her signature beading and whimsical wire designs customized to your specifications. If your summer is full of weddings, baby showers, or rooftop 21st birthday barbeques, there’s everything baby to bridal! Her designs include personalized picture frames, a whole line of Judaica, charming housewares, barware, and of course jewelry. The friendly staff will be on hand to help you and there’s a great selection in store, so if you need something for a forgotten birthday or housewarming, you’ll be in luck!

Besides Jill’s designs, there is a great pick of vintage accessories including handbags, belt buckles and jewelry. The store also features independent designers like the beautiful chunky 18K gold-plated rings by Brazilian jewelry designer Simone.

One of the best things about the selection is that there’s something for every price range and every style. The frequent sales and will keep you stopping by the store often. Right now, there’s a sale on some of Jillery’s handmade housewares and vintage belts! I picked up a wine caddy for half off – for research of course!
