PDT - Please Dont Tell

All right, I’m going to let you in on a secret, but Please Don’t Tell.

There is a great little speak easy that just opened in June called PDT. You enter through a small hot dog joint, walk into an old phone booth, pick up the phone, and voila! A door opens and you’re let into a modern bar with vintage values.

While the fact that it’s a speak easy is cool and the way that you get in is fun, what I was most impressed with at PDT was the staff and the drink selection.

Everyone who works there is friendly and laid back. The bartender actually enjoys figuring out new concoctions and takes the time to talk to his customers. The drinks are old fashioned, many of them containing egg whites and hard to find liquors, such as Creme de Violet, which is featured on the menu in the Silver Lily. If you take the time to look at the bar, they have an array of alcohol you wished you could find when you were flipping through your Savoy Cocktail Book.

If you’re looking for an interesting to place to hang out with friends or if you’re trying to impress a date, head over to PDT.

Klimat - East Village NYC

If you were meeting up with a few friends after work, walking down the street and looking for a spot to have a few drinks and catch up Klimat is the kind of place that would make everyone slow their ever-brisk pace at the same time, look at each other and say, “Here?” “Yeah, this looks good.”

Because even if you don’t know that Klimat just opened or that it offers an interesting array of primarily Eastern European beer and wine, the laid-back atmosphere will still draw you in from the sidewalk.

With its large, welcoming tables, comfortable benches (with backs!), and fresh flowers, this is a place that invites you to stay for awhile.

There are wine and beer tastings daily and a happy hour that lasts for three (4-7pm, including Sundays). They also have a small menu of mostly Polish offerings, so if you get hungry there’s no need to leave.

Tips:

-min. charge $20
-the “semi-sweet” wine is really sweet! Do a tasting first.

Dumpling Man

Do you know the Dumpling Man? He lives on St. Marks in the East Village, unlike his famed cousin who, obviously, resides on Drury Lane. But just like Emma Roberts, Dumpling Man is doing a very good job of keeping the family legacy alive by making an impressive name for himself only a few years after breaking into the business.

The Dumpling Man is a small Chinese restaurant located at 100 St. Marks Place that serves five different kinds of handmade, you guessed it, dumplings. They include chicken, veggie, shrimp, pork, and sweetie pie. They also serve soup, salad, and flan. Dumplings may sound like more of a snack than a meal but these babies are filling. And, happily, they are also cheap. Six pieces start at $3.95 and range to $5.25.

But these are not your ordinary dumplings from the Chinese place down the street. Oh no. Owner Lucas Lin studied the art at length and brought his lessons to his funky little eatery in fully force.

This has not gone unnoticed. Since opening in the summer of 2004, Dumpling Man has drawn a steady crowd of customers. It has also caught the eye of Food Network executives, appearing on the programs, "The Secret Life of Food," and "Roker on the Road."

If you're in the mood for a super-casual meal that is inexpensive yet thoughtfully prepared with quality ingredients then Dumpling Man is a great choice.

Oh, and the Dumpling Man, he's pretty cute too....
