True Blue Belle of the Ball

Fall has always been my favorite season. Pumpkin patches and apple picking were as much a part of my life growing up as sitting on Santa’s lap and playing with My Little Pony. Like everything I loved as a kid, my love for autumn weather somehow followed me to adulthood. Now the thing I love most about this time of year? The clothing!

Take a look, (okay, maybe more like a long lingering gaze – try not to drool) at this Cobalt Party Dress
from designer B with G! Jewel tones like this bright blue are perfect for pulling together that fall ensemble. Also try rich eggplant, a bright kelly green or deep red for colors that pop against those changing leaves.

This dress will function well throughout the week for work with a great pair of flats or will keep you looking hot on the weekends with black tights and platform booties! The simple lines and puffy sleeves follow this season’s most fabulous silhouettes and is begging for you to accessorize it with chunky jewelry.

Visit Wink NYC for more dresses that’ll take you from work to the weekend and one-click shopping for shoes and accessories.

Short Sleeves Heat up Winter Fashion

Some women don’t like winter because it’s impossible to show skin. Others don’t like it because it’s impossible to feel sexy in layers of bulky clothes. I think we may have finally found a solution to both these issues. Fresh off the rack this fall season is the short(er) sleeve jacket.

Now, I can’t comment on the functionality of wearing short(er) sleeves in winter, or even fall for that matter, but I will say that I love this look and I endorse it 110%. It’s a great way to differentiate yourself from the crowd of black jackets. And even though silhouettes are generally slimming down this season, the short sleeve can be one way to incorporate a little volume – volume in a place that won’t horribly distort your proportions. To say nothing of the fact that the short sleeve jacket is also a great way to show off your tres chic gloves (also hot this season, so it's a perfect pairing)...what are you waiting for?

Jackets are a big investment, so be sure to choose one that you’ll like for awhile. The short sleeve look could be a trend, but my .02 cents is that it’s a look worth trying. My personal favorite is this metallic gray coat by Charles Gray. It’s available at www.nordstrom.com. The Peter Pan collar and shiny big buttons are great embellishments, but what really makes the coat special is the tailoring at the waist that is complimented by the exaggerated bell sleeves.

Other options are:
Rebecca Taylor - Wool & Angora Swing Jacket - www.Saks.com
Couture Couture - Jacquard Coat - www.NeimanMarcus.com

Not Your Nanny's Jumper-- the perfect autumn investment

JUMPER:
1. a one-piece, sleeveless dress, or a skirt with straps and a complete or partial bodice, usually worn over a blouse by women and children.
OR
2. the lazy girl's surefire wardrobe show-stopper.

Ideal for layers, a jumper, captures everything I love about fall. You're dressed collegiate but playful-- complemented by crunchy autumn leaves, a cool breeze and a chiseled-faced date. I think Jack Nicholson circa 1970 in the amazing film Carnal Knowledge.

It's coy and covered, but the clean lines and smooth silhouette make it smart and still youthful. I think it's a nice substitute for those who still can't figure out how to pull off plaid without looking like a bad Britney Spears throwback. Think the instant sex appeal of schoolgirl without the Halloween effect. It's also a low-key version of this season's suspender trend, for those who like to ease into the fads with clothes we might actually keep.

And you'll find there are tons of adorable mod versions of the jumper out there-- from dresses to jumper-inspired tanks. You can rock a shorter hemline because it's countered by a covered up top and worn with opaque tights. You can also still incorporate your thick strapped tank tops from the summer over a brightly colored turtleneck, with a slimming pencil skirt for the office and if you're daring some of those tie-up oxfords that everyone is pushing. I'd punch it up with patent Mary Janes or shimmery flats.

Urban Outfitters has some cheap dresses and jumper-inspired tanks, while Banana Republic has a more traditional covered-up version.

Your Fall Wardrobe

It’s that time of year again. As a chill creeps into the air and t-shirts alone aren’t going to cut it anymore, we’re stuck wondering what to wear. Have we even looked at our cold weather wardrobes since March? What pieces are still going to work with our current wardrobe and lifestyle, and which pieces generally need to be sent out to Goodwill?
Here are a few tips:

1) Discerningly appraise your cold-weather wardrobe. We all know you’re going to be shopping, so try to get rid of almost half of your old sweaters and jackets. I know this is tricky and you’re not a Vanderbilt, but sorting and discarding it going to be crucial for your style and the organization of your upcoming closet.

2) Before you head to the mall, decide on what you are missing but absolutely need to round out your wardrobe. I’m going to assume you own a sweatshirt, but how about an extra-long tank for layering, or a warmer blazer for the office?

3) If anything is decidedly trendy rather than classic (ie, bolero-length jackets) then you’ll probably want to wait and see what the season brings before you strut in something that may be outdated. The September copy of any magazine will clue you in to lengths, colors, and styles of the upcoming season.

Remember: cashmere is forever. Neutrals are always a safe purchase. A great pair of boots will transcend autumn to winter. Less is more, so having a few great pieces and wearing them often with your old wardrobe is going to take you right through the cold and back into the beautiful embrace of Spring.
