A Fresh Take on Jailbird Stripes
You can call me crazy if you want, but I really think that jailbird stripes are making a serious appearance this season. I’ve been spotting them all over the place: www.gap.com, www.yesstyle.com, www.shopbop.com.
The re-emergence of stripes begs this question: is there any way to totally rock this look? For years fashion gurus have been proclaiming that stripes only make you look wide – an adjective that I don’t think any of us strive to achieve. Now, I don’t know that I have the itching to wear stripes myself, but here are a few quick tips on how to make the look work for you:
Select Tops with Shape – a boxy cut flatters next to no one, and when you pair boxy with stripes you’ve got some serious bad news bears. Cinching at the waist is a good thing (you could also accomplish the same effect with a belt – also hot right now)
Go for Tops with Length – the longer the top the more it is going to lengthen your line. Length = lean, which is always a good thing. If your striped top isn’t long enough, try layering with a longer top underneath to get that long line.
My third tip really combines the two aforementioned ones. When you’re going for a striped top, use other pieces to break up the stripes (this includes skin, ladies…skin is in!) Jewelry, belts, and layers are all good ways to make your look less jailbird and totally fashionista.

Fall 2007 Trend: How to be Lady
Tired of 80’s gear – stretch leggings and such? After seasons of hiding the feminine shape with trapezoids and androgynous gear, this fall season brings a new slew of trends. One of my personal favorites is the reinstitution of glamour and elegance, inspired by 1940’s style. The look is unmistakably ladylike, curve-hugging, and includes items like cinched waists, pencil skirts, gloves, hats, soft waves, and red lips. Think Veronica Lake, Lauren Bacall, Ava Gardner.
Three hot trends that can be classified as 1940’s style are:
Hats – From the fedora to the wide-brimmed variety, hats are unmistakably in. What better way to dress up your cold weather gear? This trend was embraced by Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, and Proenza Schouler (among others). A hat is unexpected, and fun – but watch out for the hat hair! (Photo shown from www.style.com)
Gloves – Chic, chic, and more chic. I prefer the leather variety myself. Every length is in, so you’ve got a lot of options here. We’re not talking about silk ballroom gloves either; we’re talking about something that is both practical and elegant for cold weather. Ralph Lauren, Carolina Herrera, and Marc Jacobs endorsed the look on their runways, so how can you resist? (Photo shown from www.style.com)
Cap Toe Shoes – These have been popping up all over the place, and are available at a variety of price points. They say some styles never die, and cap toe shoes are truly a classic. They’ve been reinvented this time with a funky twist: chunky heels, flats, pattern, and bright contrasting colors. (Betsey Johnson "Leopold" Shoes available at www.nordstrom.com for $190).

Shockingly Red Lips
I'm already starting to feel the brisk weather of Fall approaching, but I'm not too worried. Why? Because the makeup trends for this Fall are ridiculously great. Gone are the days of sheer glosses--Red lipstick is in!
Red lips are so classic, and everyone can pull off the look . Cool skin tones look fab in blue-based reds while warm tones simply glow in tomato reds. Pale gals like me can pull off a bright cherry red, just skimp on the eye makeup to avoid looking overdone.
The one thing that makes me hesitant to wear red lipstick is that it is so high maintenence. It seems like you have to check it every five seconds to make sure it's still there and looking perfect. And most times you have to actually fix it (which requires pulling out a mirror and spending a while making your lips look decent).
Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to avoid having to redo your lips constantly:
1) Apply a bit of foundation to your lips. This gives the lipstick something to hold onto.
2) Dust on a bit of translucent powder (again--something for the color to grab).
3) Line your lips with a color that matches your actual lip color. Matching the red lipstick could potentially leave you with a red rim around your lips if the lipstick begins to fade.
4) Apply the lipstick to your lips using a lip brush and working from the center of your lips out.
5) Blot.
6) Apply a second time.
Once you complete these steps, you'll be left with a lasting pout that flatters you. Enjoy!

Pantone Fall Fashion Color Report 2007
I know, I know. You’re thinking, “But, we’re not even halfway through summer and you’re talking about fall?” Here’s the thing: I saw a commercial on TV the other day for Macy’s and the sole focus of the advertisement was the release of fall styles in their stores. It may be July ladies, but you gotta think ahead!
Pantone (www.pantone.com) recently released their 2007 fall fashion color predictions. It’ll be interesting to see how many of these colors make it off the runway into reality and mainstream stores. According to the color gurus, “complex and exotic describe the intriguingly unusual and inviting color palette for fall ‘07. The traditional neutral shades expected for autumn have been replaced this season with rich, nuanced hues, offering more opportunity for creativity with interesting and unexpected color combinations.”
Colors include shades like, “Spicy Chili Pepper,” “Lemon Curry,” “Purple Wine,” “Dusk,” “Earthy Burnt Ochre,” and my favorite, “Stargazer.” One thing is for certain, with names this sensual, you know the color palette can’t be boring! These bold hues will spice up any fall wardrobe, and stand out in stark contrast to the usual black and brown.
For detailed information and illustrations of these colors and more, you can visit the Pantone website and download their color report for 2007 Fall Fashion. The direct link to the PDF is below.
