The Village Idiot

When a bar/restaurant has a name like the Village Idiot, there is bound to be buzz surrounding it. If the name immediately conjures images of frat boys chugging Bud Lights and munching on questionable popcorn and peanuts, you might want to rethink your plans to take your former college buddies there when they are in town and cruisin’ for a boozin’. The Village Idiot might cater to a younger crowd, but the New York-esque atmosphere houses professional, impeccably dressed patrons looking for fine wines by the glass, eclectic beers, and food that goes above and beyond standard bar fare.

Because the Village Idiot draws inspiration from English pubs, the menu features standards like the juicy upscale pub burger, fish ‘n chips and pork sausage. For those looking for a finer dining experience, there are a host of other options, like a goat cheese tart, warm frisee salad with sherry shallot vinaigrette, and a cornmeal-battered catfish served with black eyed peas. Dessert options include a warm chocolate chip cookie served with vanilla ice cream, and a much-revered strawberry shortcake. As for the bowls of peanuts and stale popcorn? You’ll have to look elsewhere on the always bumping Melrose Avenue.

With the upscale menu, classic décor and more sophisticated beverage offerings, the Village Idiot has become a hot spot for many in the entertainment industry to grab drinks during the work week, or rub elbows on the weekends. Despite the presence of celebrities and young professionals, the Idiot also attracts a host of characters from the surrounding West Hollywood neighborhood who are looking for a nice glass of beer, and lively conversation with their friends. While the sophisticated atmosphere has potential to be off-putting, ultimately, the ambiance is warm and welcoming. Just be sure to bring cash for the valet, and an iron will for the wait to use the one stall in the ladies’ bathroom.

Cirque du Soleil's "Corteo"

Aug 23 2007 - 8:00pm
Oct 28 2007 - 8:00pm
US/Pacific

Granted, schlepping down to Inglewood is exactly how it sounds. But I tell you what, fighting traffic on the 405 is worth every repeat of Fergi's Big Girls Don't Cry if you want to be transported to the magical dreamworld of "Corteo".
Cirque du Soleil's Corteo takes you on a journey through a circus-like atmosphere filled with gilded chandeleirs, clowns, Alice in Wonderland like cups and of course, acrobats with amazingly sculpted bodies that - let's be honest - we couldn't acquire even if we spent 23 hours a day on the Elliptical. The acrobats, per usual are absolutely amazing and the audience is fun - excited to be there, ready to be inspired.
Jewel tones, sparkling costumes and echanting music give the sensation that you're flying along with the performers. We've all had that dream where everything was suspended between reality and fantasy - everything around us glittering, sparkling like the fairy books we read as a kid. This is just like that experience, except when you wake up you're more likely to meet your friends for cocktails then get a Starbucks and start your day.
If you don't have the time or patience to take another trip up to Vegas, Corteo is certainly not settling. It's a delight. This fun respite is a perfect date night, family event or just another excellent way to treat yourself to the otherwordly.

Wax Poetic Salon

By: Kris Marvin Hughes

For those valley-dwellers who are obsessive about being able to multi-task even when out of work, you will be in love with Wax Poetic Salon in Burbank. Where else can you get your hair done, your back massaged, and your bikini-line waxed all while taking in an art show and downing a complimentary cocktail. Well, thanks to Wax Poetic Salon, it’s possible. While initially the idea of a salon being connected to an art gallery may confuse you, from the moment you step in to the salon you see exactly why this works. The lobby is essentially the art gallery which includes a wonderfully stocked bar with alcohol and E-lix-r Tonics. I mean, come on, how many times can you read a Cosmo while waiting to be waxed? It’s so much more fun to be drinking a free glass of Stella on tap while perusing the modern art from local artists. And when it’s time to get the hair ripped from your eyebrows, you’re a little more relaxed and feel as though you got in a little culture in the process. They carry a large array of products which artfully line the walls in the front lobby and have multiple hair stations and a few very clean rooms for waxing and massage. Not only is the space incredibly warm and inviting, but the staff at Wax Poetic are extremely friendly and really fantastic at what they do. My hair and brows have never looked better. And, even though they shower you with free drinks, the prices are really competitive. But, don’t take my word for it - rev up the Hybrid and scoot your butt over there.

Watercress (A Cafe)

By: Kris Marvin Hughes

From the very moment you step into this adorably modern café, you will feel as though you are a welcome guest in Chef Cindy’s home. Decorated very simply, but extremely elegantly, this delightful café has an ever-changing menu filled with mouthwatering homemade soups, salads and sandwiches. They even have a nice selection of bottled beverages at the front counter to choose from (Jones soda anyone?) They have a number of dark wood tables and chairs, as well as a few bench seats and an adorable window bench that overlooks Ventura Boulevard. On my first visit, I had the tomato gazpacho soup which was served in a very modern-art-looking bowl accented by fresh chunks of avocado which floated happily in the soup. I also devoured a delightfully fresh Tomato and Buffala Mozzarella Panini which I have to say was the best one I’ve ever had. As if I wasn’t already impressed with the atmosphere of Watercress and the artfully-presented amazing food, I was downright blown away by the fact the Chef actually brings out the food herself. What a wonderful touch to make all her patrons feel truly welcome and appreciated. If you’re in Sherman Oaks, do yourself a huge favor and eat at Watercress. But, just be aware, this café is not open for dinner – just breakfast and lunch. And I guarantee you’ll see me there – I am hooked on this place.
