Sequin the Eskimo
Like all art, all fashion steals. Seems we’re in the midst of a never-ending acid flashback recently—with 1960s mod minis, and the summer’s 1970s options- either preppy tennis chic, or aloof rock-star sex kitten, thanks to American Apparel. Not that I’m complaining—I’m happy mod is still around for the fall, with it’s a-line mini dresses and flat boots. This is just to say, expect to be doing the time warp, again: in the fall collections of Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler, featured below, the look is Daisy from the Great Gatsby refusing to take off her party dress on a cold winter night. Still allowing for a lot of leg combined with big, wool winter coats, I adore the hint of weekend glitz that offsets the foreshadowing of winter’s dark palette.
That’s where the sequins come in. My recent obsessions are dark black or navy blue mixed with silver in a radiant statement piece. How better to maintain the thrill of summer in those cooler months? Spice up your Saturday night by literally lighting up the room—whether it’s a cocktail party or just your local dance spot or bar, sequins can’t help but catch the eye. If it’s a dress I play it down with messy curls and more natural make-up; if it’s a top I pair it with a simple black mini and opaque tights, or dark skinny jeans and heels. For a day-time look, opt for lighter and more casual colors and layer it with a heavier knit sweater.
Shopping vintage makes it easy: you can find handmade, beautifully crafted, one-of-a-kind pieces at insane prices, often at around $5. Forever 21 and H&M also have nice options, with more toned-down accents, if you click through.
