Simon LA

While most hotels are not worthy destinations for a night out with the girls, or for a leisurely fine dining experience, Simon LA, the restaurant at the Solfitel Hotel in Los Angeles, is making a name for itself as a trendy hot spot for both jet-setters and locals alike.

Love to Hate South Beach's Love Hate Lounge

As a Miami Ink fan, I heard about their new venture on T.V and decided to try it out for myself. Chris Nunez and Ami James from, the popular T.V. show, Miami Ink recently opened up their own bar called Love Hate. The name comes from loving what you do but hating it at the same time. The bar/lounge has an unusually laid back ambience for South Beach. It is beautifully decorated with tattoo inspired artwork. It features live music, rock, ska, hip hop and almost everything in between. Bottle service is available and there's enough space to dance or lounge on a couch.

Sequin the Eskimo

Like all art, all fashion steals. Seems we’re in the midst of a never-ending acid flashback recently—with 1960s mod minis, and the summer’s 1970s options- either preppy tennis chic, or aloof rock-star sex kitten, thanks to American Apparel. Not that I’m complaining—I’m happy mod is still around for the fall, with it’s a-line mini dresses and flat boots. This is just to say, expect to be doing the time warp, again: in the fall collections of Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler, featured below, the look is Daisy from the Great Gatsby refusing to take off her party dress on a cold winter night. Still allowing for a lot of leg combined with big, wool winter coats, I adore the hint of weekend glitz that offsets the foreshadowing of winter’s dark palette.

That’s where the sequins come in. My recent obsessions are dark black or navy blue mixed with silver in a radiant statement piece. How better to maintain the thrill of summer in those cooler months? Spice up your Saturday night by literally lighting up the room—whether it’s a cocktail party or just your local dance spot or bar, sequins can’t help but catch the eye. If it’s a dress I play it down with messy curls and more natural make-up; if it’s a top I pair it with a simple black mini and opaque tights, or dark skinny jeans and heels. For a day-time look, opt for lighter and more casual colors and layer it with a heavier knit sweater.

Shopping vintage makes it easy: you can find handmade, beautifully crafted, one-of-a-kind pieces at insane prices, often at around $5. Forever 21 and H&M also have nice options, with more toned-down accents, if you click through.

evilOlive

Oh who was it I saw, oh who? The newest incarnation of the club formerly known as Four, that's who. Old ownership and new management have brought in a new theme, this time – wait for it – palindromic phrases, with the walls and specialty drink menu littered with mirror-image phrases. Sip a Dr. Awkward at either the front or back bar (which, in case you were wondering, are not identical), or check out the curious smiles on your fellow imbibers' faces as they too work backwards on phrases like "devil never even lived" or "A Man, A Plan, A Canal - Panama."

While the premise is new, the space's layout remains essentially untouched from its past life, meaning the second floor is still where the DJ's spin Friday and Saturday's tunes de nuit and the utilitarian lower-level front room still yields to the increasingly low-lit and increasingly posh rear. Drinks run the usual range for this particular part of town, although nightly specials include half-price house specialty cocktails Mondays and Thursdays and $4 Fat Tire bottles Tuesdays. Those of you carrying the weekend out for another day can feast on $2 Bud, Bud Select and Bud Light bottles on Sundays.

Of course, no self-respecting gin joint in this neighborhood would be complete without spotlighting at least one great American bargain-basement swill, and evilOlive does its part Wednesdays with $1 PBR bottles; for those of you less inclined, there's also featured $3 whiskey the same night.

Stationed conveniently at the Ashland/Damen/Division intersection and just steps from the Division Blue Line stop, evilOlive makes for an interesting addition to a night out in Wicker Park. Never a foot too far, even.
