Luxurious GREEN Fashion at Skinstinct

I'm all about eco-friendly lifestyle these days. However, I must admit that every now and again, I purchase a non-green product because it’s environmentally safe counter-part is exorbitantly priced. So, when Skinstinct--a green AND affordable boutique--opened mere steps from my flat, I was totally elated.

Skinstinct’s philosophy is all about softness. They craft their products to feel extraordinarily gentle and cozy on human skin. So, how do they do this and still maintain moderate prices and eco-friendly policy? The secret is bamboo!

Bamboo is described as nature’s cashmere, except it’s actually machine washable. What’s more, it grows softer with every wash. Plus, it’s hypoallergenic, antibacterial and 100% biodegradable. The antibacterial part is particularly noteworthy because it means you can wash the items less frequently.

In addition to clothing, Skinstinct sells bamboo towels and robes. You really won’t believe how impossibly soft this material is until you check it out yourself (I may never buy cashmere again…..well, at least not anytime soon) And with shirt prices beginning at $20, what do you have to lose?

Towards the back of the store, you will find a complete line of green skin-care products, all of which are 100% vegan and organic. The manager tells me that Skinstinct will also be introducing a line of detergent relatively soon. They’re still quite new, so their web-site isn’t fully running yet, but within the month you should be able to purchase anything you can find at the actual store online.

Pugh, Peopletree and Prince at London Fashion Week

Everyone has been talking about London Fashion Week, which took place on 15-20 September. Prince performed at Mathew Williamson's show to celebrate ten years of designing. Stella McCartney made her London Fashion Week debut with a collection for Adidas. Her tennis whites outfit was sporty and cute - reason enough to pick up a racket! You can see it here.

Gareth Pugh stunned the audience by dressing models with masks and boxes on their heads. http://www.vogue.co.uk/shows/Reports/Default.aspx?stID=38726#

Amongst the many booths, one that stood out was People Tree. A tonic for the more extreme and 'out there' expressions at Fashion Week, the designs were comfortable, elegant and made for real women. Best of all, the ethical company practices fair trade, buying from fabric producers and artisans all over the world, and giving them a fair price. Peopletree's organic cotton clothes are so soft! http://www.peopletree.co.uk

NOPA

NOPA is more than an acronym for the North of the Panhandle district northeast of Golden Gate Park, it’s the hot New American restaurant that along with a slew of shops and clubs is transforming the area. Which came first, the new neighborhood moniker or the restaurant to go with it? Who cares when an amazingly fresh organic restaurant such as this revitalizes a neighborhood, pushing out the panhandlers and making it somewhat of a destination.

Gather at the bar or at one of two communal seating areas and peruse a drink menu offering choices like the divine elderflower cocktail and a world-class wine list. The scene is a comfortable artsy casual mix, highlighted with floor to ceiling murals by local talent Brian Barneclo that enhance the modern ambiance. Peer from balcony seating into the open kitchen for a bird’s eye view of chefs at work. Servers with a down to earth attitude deliver Mediterranean-infused comfort food, and in winter or foggy weather the seafood stew spiced with saffron—which always sparks my creativity—is just right and comes with a side of crusty rustic bread. The menu changes seasonally, so check the website for the current version. More than just a neighborhood, NOPA personifies the new San Francisco dining experience.—Michelle Zaffino

Green Market

By the time the summer is over, I’m sunburned, I’m broke, and my knee caps are sore from navigating through hoards of festival goers. Most major neighborhoods in Atlanta offer a spring or summer festival during the same clump of calendar. They’re incredibly well attended (code phrase for overpopulated), they occur during the warmest part of the year (code phrase for over 90 degrees), and they’re very family friendly (code phrase for some kid dripped a blob of grape Snow Cone on my new Puma’s).

A healthy alternative to the festival rat race is The Green Market held every Saturday from May through October in Midtown’s Piedmont Park. Set in Atlanta’s premier Park — this open air market features the harvest, produce, and goods of local farmers, gardeners, bakers, dessert makers, pet suppliers, coffee roasters, artists, and much more.

Stroll among the dogwoods, sample artisan cheeses, sip a cup of smoky, bold espresso, listen to live homegrown Georgia folk music, take home a basket of locally grown rattlesnake beans from Scharko Farms, or pick up a new recipe at a live cooking demonstration by chefs from some of Atlanta’s finest restaurants.

The farmers, merchants, and artists at Green Market all have strong commitments to keeping the earth green. Most of the artists create their work from recycled materials, the farmers practice sustainable farming, and some of the gourmet merchants are card-carrying members of the International Slow Food Organization. Even the dog biscuits at Green Market are 100% natural.
