Make Art Not War by Yezenia Herrera

In the city of San Francisco, supporting the Arts is as common as the foggy weather. Murals can be seen on the side of buildings and exhibits bring in an array of fascinating paintings, sculptures, and modern pieces. But, as amazing as these murals and exhibits are, unfortunately we just don’t find the time to get there. On a Friday night when you are debating what to do with your friends, visiting an art galley is the last place you want to be. Or maybe not…

At 111 Minna you will find yourself in a trendy bar amidst the eccentric and urban crowd. 111 is hidden in an alley of San Francisco patiently awaiting your arrival. But once you’re in (usually after a $5 dollar cover charge), you experience the beauty of art and the feel of a slightly industrial setting. The street gallery is divided by two rooms yet both fully equipped with a DJ and bar. The music played depends on the night, but on Wednesdays, except to listen to some good house music. Oh, and the drinks there are more than satisfying!

What I like about 111 Minna is that it combines the beauty of art, the essence of San Francisco. It is young, lively, and entertaining. So I recommend that this weekend, leave behind the Marina and be one of the many supporters of the Arts.

Cuba in San Francisco by Yezenia Herrera

In this dynamic city of San Francisco, there are hundreds of remarkable restaurants, cafes, and bars to choose from. However, for those who live here, finding these places could be at times strenuous and time consuming. Yet, for visitors and foreigners, the search could be down right impossible. Well, this is where I come along.

As a resident of San Francisco for more than three years now, and an addict of caffeine, I have gone to the worst coffee bar known to man as well as the most prestigious café San Francisco has to offer. But over the months, I have found a café that because of its soothing atmosphere and delicious coffee, continually makes me return.

Café Lo Cubano is located in the heart of Laurel Heights and sits on the top of the hill awaiting avid coffee drinkers, bookworms, or computer junkies. But this café is unlike all others for the ambiance mimics the feel of Pre- Castro Cuba. Their menu includes a variety of hot pressed Cuban sandwiches and bold Cuban coffee, including my favorite, Cortadito (a sweetened espresso splashed with milk and topped with foam) that I highly recommend. Impressively enough, they sell Free Trade Coffee as well!

The sweet song of Cuban music, beautiful antiques, and unique art are displayed amidst baristas in black. Live music is also played a few nights a week turning this cute coffee shop into an authentic, stunning wine bar. I advise everyone, San Franciscans and visitors alike, to sit for a cup of coffee in the morning or stay for a glass of wine at night, knowing Cuba can be found and enjoyed in the heart of San Francisco.

Amélie of Nob Hill

Everybody loves Amélie. When I hear the name what immediately comes to mind is the favorite film featuring the sweet and fantastically quirky Amélie of Monmartre. Audrey Tautou plays the gamine French girl with a heart for helping people stuck in emotional gridlock. San Francisco now has its own Amélie, a saucy new wine bar on Polk Street in Nob Hill, with its own version of vino therapy.
