Fashion Soup

Squeezed between a FedEx and a neighborhood deli, this blink and you’ll miss it Fashion Soup is so small that it practically coined the term “hole in the wall.” That doesn’t stop locals and neighboring businesses from forming lines outside the shop around lunchtime.

A local mini haunt since 1997, Fashion Soup is renowned around Midtown for it’s diverse yet affordable samplings of soups. While they offer the basic staples such as Chowder and Chicken Noodle, you should definitely try the Morocan chicken with couscous or crab with shrimp. If you can’t decide which soup to try first, ask for a sample. You can get up to two free cups. Just don’t eat the samples and run. It’s tacky. All soups come with a bread and a fruit.

Want something to wash down that couscous with? Try an empanada. (Spanish for meat patties.) Besides beef they also offer a selection of chicken, potato, ham and cheese and if you stop by early morning bacon and eggs.

The staff is super friendly. Due to the size of the shop there are very limited stool seats, especially during lunch. If you managed to stop by during a slow period you can grab a seat by the window and read the magazines lying around for free. There’s even a large pitcher of ice water for your convenience. Be sure to stop by after 3pm. That’s when they slash the prices to ½ off.

Crudo Bar - Lower East Side

Sometimes you just want to go to a place that isn't crazy and overrun. You want a place you and your girls can go to have a nice conversation yet indulge in some nice male scenery without being harassed. You want a place where the music is good enough to get your booty shakin'. That place for me is Crudo Bar located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Crudo is one of those little gems you don't tell anyone but your friends about. The atmosphere is inviting and warm. You can feel the Spanish influence in its decor and its ambience. I love a place that has a nice attentive bartender and every time I visit Crudo, I get one. They have a good selection of wines and beers and of course your standard fare of liquor. Now, the best part of Crudo Bar....outdoor seating! The back patio is really nice when you want to enjoy the outdoors while drinking a refreshing cocktail. The patio at Crudo actually shares the patio with 1492 Food which makes for a nice neighborly atmosphere. I like to indulge in Tapas next door (1492) and then hit Crudo for a nice glass of wine and some Spanish flare. Good music, good service, good atmosphere and a patio to boot....what more could you want in a bar?
