Doyle and Doyle

I never thought I would get to review a jewelry store, other than Claire's or Cinderella Story, but my recent engagement seems to be paying off in more ways than one.

My fiance went to a little store on Orchard Street called Doyle and Doyle. Run by two sisters, they have a simple goal of making jewelry shopping more egalitarian and stress-free. They carry "a rare mix of pieces from the Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Retro periods, alongside select contemporary designs."

While the front showroom can be dazzling, the sisters have many, many "mountings" in the back: rings without the stones. They will then source the stones for you to make your very own special, custom ring.

I love my engagement ring. It looks like an heirloom from generations back (in fact, the mounting is vintage) and its utterly unique and absolutely perfect.

You can shop online and they had a lot of pieces for $500 or less. I know that the next time I have a big gift to buy for someone, its going to be with Doyle and Doyle.

PDT - Please Dont Tell

All right, I’m going to let you in on a secret, but Please Don’t Tell.

There is a great little speak easy that just opened in June called PDT. You enter through a small hot dog joint, walk into an old phone booth, pick up the phone, and voila! A door opens and you’re let into a modern bar with vintage values.

While the fact that it’s a speak easy is cool and the way that you get in is fun, what I was most impressed with at PDT was the staff and the drink selection.

Everyone who works there is friendly and laid back. The bartender actually enjoys figuring out new concoctions and takes the time to talk to his customers. The drinks are old fashioned, many of them containing egg whites and hard to find liquors, such as Creme de Violet, which is featured on the menu in the Silver Lily. If you take the time to look at the bar, they have an array of alcohol you wished you could find when you were flipping through your Savoy Cocktail Book.

If you’re looking for an interesting to place to hang out with friends or if you’re trying to impress a date, head over to PDT.

Tips:

M-Sa, reservations required, taken day of, after 3pm
Sun, walk ins welcome, no standing room

patio out back

cocktails, $12; beer, $7

opens 6pm

serves hot dogs and hamburgers

Reminiscence Inc.

If you ever find yourself longing for the days when Frankie Said Relax, mousse was a hair product and not a desert and bands like Oingo Boingo and the Bangles rules the pop charts take a moment to flashback to the “Greed is Good” era and stroll on down to Reminiscence, a cheesy, kitschy but never boring vintage store.

In the front of Reminiscence shop, you’ll find fun trinkets such as whoopee cushions, magic eighth ball and Mad Libs. They also have silly putty, wind up toys, and those little foam things that you put in water and they grow in five minutes. There’s also a neat selection of jewelry and pendants in glass cases up front.

Head toward the middle of the shop and here’s where all the sartorial fun begins. Fluffy prom dresses, funky t-shirts with slogans, outfits with glitter and sparkles and giant shoulder pads to start with. Just be careful when walking around the clothing stands. They are packed tightly together. Toward the back are the dressing rooms and shoes. It’s kind of a mess but you can find great finds such as disposable $10 shoes.

When you’re browsing, don’t let the overpriced clothing discourage you though. If you scrounge around long enough you can score some real finds.

Libertine for Target GO International Launches July 15th

On July 15th, Target launches its newest GO International collection. This season it's American design team Libertine whose versions of their runway looks will available for much, much less at the chain store. Started in September 2001, Libertine is made up of Los Angeles based designer Johnson Hartig and New York based designer Cindy Greene. To create their runway looks, Hartig finds vintage pieces, which he re-cuts and sends to Greene, who silk-screens images of birds, skulls, and other whimsical items onto the clothing.

Joining past designers Behnaz Sarafpour, Luella Bartley, and most recently Patrick Robinson, Libertine’s Target line consists of twenty-two looks, highlighting their preppy-fun, vintage-inspired style. Some of the pieces are perfect for summer, like the khaki Bermuda shorts with bats flying up the leg, pleated skirt, and navy slip dress trimmed in black lace, while others are great to take you into fall, throw on the pink argyle sweater vest printed with green skulls over their polo shirt or toss on the blue trench coat and matching blue bucket hat when it rains.

The looks are only available for ninety days and prices range from $12.99 to $39.99. Considering that Proenza Schouler’s famous silk bustier tops sold out as soon as they hit Target stores, don’t wait until the last day to buy clothing from this popular design house, worn by celebrities like Mick Jagger, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Liv Tyler.
