Amélie of Nob Hill

Everybody loves Amélie. When I hear the name what immediately comes to mind is the favorite film featuring the sweet and fantastically quirky Amélie of Monmartre. Audrey Tautou plays the gamine French girl with a heart for helping people stuck in emotional gridlock. San Francisco now has its own Amélie, a saucy new wine bar on Polk Street in Nob Hill, with its own version of vino therapy.

Klimat - East Village NYC

If you were meeting up with a few friends after work, walking down the street and looking for a spot to have a few drinks and catch up Klimat is the kind of place that would make everyone slow their ever-brisk pace at the same time, look at each other and say, “Here?” “Yeah, this looks good.”

Because even if you don’t know that Klimat just opened or that it offers an interesting array of primarily Eastern European beer and wine, the laid-back atmosphere will still draw you in from the sidewalk.

With its large, welcoming tables, comfortable benches (with backs!), and fresh flowers, this is a place that invites you to stay for awhile.

There are wine and beer tastings daily and a happy hour that lasts for three (4-7pm, including Sundays). They also have a small menu of mostly Polish offerings, so if you get hungry there’s no need to leave.

Tips:

-min. charge $20
-the “semi-sweet” wine is really sweet! Do a tasting first.

Get Wined Up!

Whether it’s the end of a long workday, a first date or a much-needed cure for a Sunday morning hangover Wined Up and Punch are the answers to your food and drink prayers!

On the first floor is the newly renovated restaurant and bar Punch. You can come for lunch, dinner or just a cocktail at the bar, but they serve brunch the best. With their Punch Brunch Prix Fix ($14.95) you’ll enjoy either a Bloody Mary, Mimosa and coffee or tea, freshly baked muffins with homemade seasonal preserves and one of Chef Matthew Corbett’s delicious entrees. The menu offers a mouth-watering selection of revived favorites like the Salmon Eggs Benedict, Open Faced Grilled Lamb Pita and Brioche French Toast with mixed berries.

The owners of Punch wanted to provide New Yorkers with a new wining and dining experience for the , so architect Jay Valgora designed the beautiful second floor wine bar Wined Up. For the wine novice, don’t be afraid of the 100-foot wall of wine and ten-page wine list (by the glass or by the bottle)–be excited! The staff at Wined Up will guide you through your first or your fiftieth visit with detailed tastings.

Along with your bottle (or two,) let your taste buds take a trip through Wined Up’s menu. Wine wouldn’t be wine without a selection of fresh cheeses to accompany. There are small plates like the roasted pumpkin hush puppies, and larger portions to share like the Mediterranean plate or the Yellowfin tuna sashimi. For the ultimate treat, indulge in fondue – sweet or savory!

If you thought wine bars were stuffy and boring, then you need to get Wined Up.

Renegade Wine

Maverick doesn't have a sommelier. If you want advice on the best wine to drink with your juicy fried chicken, the wine director will appear at your table with an unusual and carefully selected list. So your entree receives the perfect wine, but you're spared the pomp, circumstance and need to stifle your laughter in your perfectly pressed linen napkin when your waiter sniffs haughtily. Maverick serves American cuisine with organic produce and sustainable meats and fish, but it's the new wine seminars that make you uncharitably consider not telling your friends, lest they make it harder to get a seat.

Each seminar features a specific type of wine (like chardonnay or bubbly) and the wine director describes each of three different glasses as you sip and snack on the small plate of corresponding food. As someone who rarely makes it out the door with matching socks, this moved me to an entirely new level of existence. Carefully matched to Cowgirl Creamery cheeses, plates of mango and prosciutto, and Maverick's special crab puffs, wine can be an uplifting experience - even if your knowledge of wine is summed up by your ability to point out which is red and which is white.
